It’s a new month and I’m back with some updated health and fitness goals (see Excessive Baggage)! I lost a total of 5 lbs since the beginning of the year, but it’s time get serious about this healthy lifestyle change! One of the advantages of working at a university is access to free and/or low cost health and fitness options. For the next 12 weeks, I’m taking full advantage of several programs offered at UNCG.
HealtyU is a FREE 12-week weightloss management program for faculty and staff. Each week I alternate between a small group or individual 1 hr health and wellness coaching session. The best part of Healthly U for me is accountability! I have to weigh in every week and I have a health coach making sure that I stick to my goals and challenges me when I don’t. The group sessions provide a lot of information about healthy eating options and an opportunity to share health and fitness challenges with others.
Mindful U and Active U are FREE group fitness classes for faculty/staff at the UNCG Campus Recreation Center. Did I mention that the classes are FREE! I enjoy being able to try new group fitness exercises without having to commit to joining a gym. The classes are offered 12-1 pm, during lunch (I usually just eat lunch in my office afterwards). The only downside to Active U is coming back to the office after an intense work, like cycle. My building has a shower, but it’s in the basement so I just freshen up with some baby wipes until I can get home and shower. Are you judging me right now?
No Boundaries is a 12-week 5k training program offered by Off & Running. UNCG students, faculty, staff could sign up for the on-campus program at a discounted rate. My cost was $75 and an additional $25 a month for a 3-month UNCG Campus Recreation membership (optional for a $5 discount on the No Boundaries program). I run/walk twice a week with a small running group taught by a certified running coach, which also helps with accountability. In addition to the group run, the recommended run/walk plan includes 2 additional run days and 2 optional cross training days. I use my Campus Rec membership to get in the additional workouts, usually right after work or during my lunch break. I really want to try getting up early in the morning and getting in a before work workout session, maybe one day soon. Confession, I completed a couch to 5k program a few years ago but I never completed a race! My goal this year is to not only complete a race but to complete 4 races, under 35 minutes!
Check your area for FREE running groups and drop-in fitness studios. If you are interested in a FREE running group, Black Girls Run is a great option! I still have friends from the group that I met a few years ago and I plan to join them again when No Boundaries ends. If you’re in Greensboro, NC EM Creative Fitness and Wellness offers $5 class fitness classes. You can try Zumba, Kickboxing, Yoga, etc. My favorite class is Praize Craze, a gospel aerobic class.
The most difficult part for me when it comes to health and fitness is FOOD!! I don’t enjoy cooking, I really just do enough to survive but meal planning is tough for me. I get tired of the same meals day after day.
What is your biggest struggle when it comes to health and fitness?
